ALTERNATIVE COMPUTER ACCESS AND SOFTWARE

Alternative computer access helps people with a disability to use a computer effectively. Alternative computer access may be hardware, such as ergonomic keyboards, compact keyboards, enlarged keyboards, alternative mouse pointing devices, touch screens, joysticks, and single or dual switches. ACA may also be software such as screen magnification programs, on-screen keyboards, and word prediction.

Open Labs are a free service to the community and an ideal place to learn about specific areas of assistive technology. Potential clients, family members, professionals in related fields, and other education, healthcare and human service agencies can interact with assistive technology and ask the UCP SDATC staff questions. Device and Software Lending Library

One piece or a whole system of equipment can be modified or customized to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities. The equipment loan program provides trials of various types of assistive technology equipment and software so that individuals with disabilities have an opportunity to test a particular device or program prior to purchase or at times when equipment is being repaired or is unavailable. A large amount of equipment in the UCP SDATC inventory is available to be loaned. We frequently loan keyboards, mouse-pointing devices, mounting systems, and software.

Loan Period For Alternative Computer Access

The loan is between 6 to 12 weeks, depending on the availability of the loaned equipment. We guarantee at least 30 days for the initial loan period. The loan period for software is typically 2 weeks. To download a Software Library Registration Form, click here.
